Phase angle, obtained using bioelectrical impedance analysis, non-invasively reflects the whole-body cellular condition and nutritional status and may be helpful as a prognostic factor. Patients with diabetes had a smaller phase angle than healthy subjects. However, the clinical significance of phase angle has not yet been elucidated. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between phase angle and HbA1c in patients with diabetes and the clinical relevance of phase angle. A retrospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted with Japanese patients with diabetes. Body composition was determined with bioelectrical impedance analysis, and this was used to obtain phase angle. Phase angle was assessed in relation to clinical parameters, body composition parameters, and HbA1c levels. A total of 655 patients were enrolled (400 men and 255 women, aged 57.1 ± 14.8 years, body mass index 25.6 ± 5.2 kg/m2, HbA1c 8.1 ± 1.9%). Even in patients with diabetes, the phase angle was higher in men than in women and did not differ between the types of diabetes. Multiple regression analysis, performed with phase angle as the objective variable, and age, sex, diabetes type, HbA1c, albumin level, and body mass index as explanatory variables, revealed that phase angle was negatively affected by HbA1c (B = - 0.043, 95% Confidence interval: - 0.07 to - 0.02, p < 0.001). HbA1c, age, sex, albumin level, and body mass index were independent determinants of phase angle in participants with diabetes.

BACKGROUND: The blood metabolome profiles depend on the meal intake time zone regardless of having the same meal. The serum albumin (Alb) level, which is important in managing geriatric patients with chronic diseases, is included in the metabolome analysis. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between Alb and the nutritional value of hospital meals consumed at breakfast, lunch, and dinner among geriatric patients. Chrononutrition was considered while drawing inferences. METHODS: We retrospectively surveyed 52 geriatric patients with chronic diseases (aged 79.7 ± 8.7 years) admitted at a small-scale hospital providing combined healthcare measures and oral nutritional support. The dietary intake per kilogram of body weight of nutritional components for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was individually expressed as the ratio to the whole daily food intake. The dietary pattern was determined by principal component analysis. We also conducted linear regression analysis, with Alb as the dependent variable, and age, sex, and grade assigned in this study as well as the first, second, and third principal components of the dietary patterns as the independent variables. RESULTS: Three principal components with an eigenvalue of > 1 were extracted. The second principal component was a significantly negative determinant factor for Alb (B = -0.108, P = 0.016). In patients with high Alb levels, the energy, protein, and fat ratios at lunch were positively correlated, while the energy and carbohydrate ratios at dinner were negatively correlated. Mealtimes were fixed. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that the dietary pattern predominantly observed in patients with high Alb levels may be positively associated with Alb synthesis.

Insecticidal and acaricidal activities of two geometrical isomers, (E)- and (Z)-butylidenephthalide isolated from Angelica acutiloba, against larvae and adults of fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster), cat fleas (Ctenocephalides felis) and house dust mites (Dermatophagoides farinae and Tyrophagus putrescentiae) were investigated and compared with that of positive controls. (E)- and (Z)-Butylidenephthalide exhibited 50% lethal concentration (LC50) values of 2.07 and 0.94 micromol/ml of diet concentration against larvae of D. melanogaster, respectively. This indicated that two isomers of butylidenephthalide have geometrical stereoselectivity for larvicidal effect. Even though both (E)- and (Z)-butylidenephthalide also showed potent adulticidal and acaricidal activity against adults of D. melanogaster and two mites, there was no significant difference between two isomers. Insecticidal activity of both (E)- and (Z)-butylidenephthalide toward adults of C. felis was not detected even at the maximum concentration of 200 microg/cm2.
